Enrique: That was for you, son

Jose Enrique couldn't hide his joy at scoring his first ever goal for Liverpool in Saturday's 3-0 win over Wigan Athletic – and dedicated the strike to his unborn baby boy.

The Spaniard tapped home the Reds' third at Anfield to put the seal on an excellent second-half performance from Brendan Rodgers' side.

It was Enrique's first ever Barclays Premier League goal - and afterwards he was quick to devote the effort to his son, Adrian.

He told Liverpoolfc.com: "I am very happy - firstly not for my goal, but for the three points. I think we are playing well this season, but we deserve more points. We have to keep playing like this because then I think the points will come.

"Of course, I am happy for my goal. I have a kid on the way and there are not many weeks left [until he is born] so it was for him. It is a great feeling."

Enrique's goal was his first for Liverpool on his 53rd appearance for the club - and he admits he was a little unsure of how to celebrate.

He explained: "To be honest, the first thing I wanted to do was put my thumb to my mouth, but then I didn't know what to do because I don't really score!

"But the most important thing is another three points. I am happy about my goal, but it's about the team."

Enrique's goal capped an outstanding performance from the 26-year-old, who also supplied a fine assist for the second of Luis Suarez's two goals when he dissected the Wigan defence with an inch-perfect throughball for the No.7 to latch onto.

Enrique on special strike
It helped Suarez take his tally to 13 for the season so far, but Enrique insists nobody at Melwood has been taken aback by his world-class form.

"It is no surprise for me or our teammates because we know him well," he said. "He is a great player and a key one for us. Every striker has a moment - and Luis has his moment now.

"He is scoring all the time, both with us and Uruguay too, and we hope he can stay like this for a long time."

Enrique was deployed in a left-wing position by Rodgers against the Latics, rather than his traditional full-back berth.

It's a role the former Newcastle man relished.

Enrique said: "It was good. When I was younger I played a lot of times [in that position].

"I prefer to play at left-back because I am more comfortable there as I have played there all my life. I am happy there, but I can't say I didn't enjoy playing [further forward] against Wigan because I scored a goal and created an assist - and if the manager wants me there, I will play wherever he wants.

"With this manager, even when I play as a left-back I get forward a lot because he likes the full-backs to get forward - like Glen Johnson did. It's not much of a difference to play there.
